This Monday January 21st is a big day with both Martin Luther King, Jr. Day and the second inauguration of President Obama taking place. In Harlem, The Red Rooster and Ginny’s Supper Club will be celebrating with a day that starts with televising the inauguration and following events live from Washington DC on Monday morning starting at 11:00 am. Come nightfall, the joint will be jumpin’ with an evening of cocktails, dinner and entertainment featuring a performance by the fantastic finalist from “The Voice”, Amanda Brown. King Day at Ginny’s is said to be a community celebration with free admission, but you’ll want to reserve ahead if you plan on dining.

Ginny’s Supper Club is located between 125th and 126th street and Lenox Avenue, underneath Chef Marcus Samuelsson’s Red Rooster restaurant.

Ginny’s Supper Club at The Red Rooster in Harlem is going back, way back in time with its SPEAKEASY party this Saturday night. The theme is ragtime-prohibition era atmosphere, but you know the drinks will be flowing. Guests are invited to take part and come correct and dressed as if you were stepping into a 1930′s moonshine-serving Speak Easy joint. The music will include a tribute to Bessie Smith and Louis Armstrong, performed by Maya Azucena and Allan Harris. Is Harlem jumpin’ or what!?

The First Annual SAVOR THE SEASON- UPTOWN event is happening on September 18th, offering a taste of Harlem’s eclectic cuisine from a variety of chefs and restauranteurs. Chef Marcus Samuelsson of Harlem’s Red Rooster and Maritza Wellington Owens, Chief Executive Officer, of Harvest Home Farmer’s Market have invited ten top chefs from restaurants north of 110^th Street to prepare their most tasty, innovative and exciting dishes incorporating in-season farm fresh produce. Wines will be curated by The Winery in Harlem, while beers and spirits will be curated by Harlem Public. Harlem Flo will handle all the floral arrangements for the event. Expect live music performances and raffle prizes during the evenings events at the Dinosaur Bar-B-Que banquet hall.

“Yes, Chef” – Marcus Samuelsson’s New Book Release Event in Harlem

Marcus Samuelsson is set to celebrate the launch of his memoir “Yes, Chef” with a Harlem Community Book Launch Event this Monday June 25^th. The FREE book launch event will take place from 3pm-7pm at the Richard Rodgers Amphitheater in Marcus Garvey Park (123^rd Street and Mount Morris Park West) and the book will be released in stores the next day. Harlem Community Day promises an afternoon filled with food, fun, kid’s activities, cooking demos, music, dance, drinks, and more. This is also a great occasion for Marcus Samuelsson to celebrate the success of The Red Rooster restaurant and Ginny’s Supper Club in Harlem, which are not to be missed.

Harlem Leaders Among Fast Company’s 100 Most Creative 2012

Olajide Williams of Hip Hop Public Health and Marcus Samuelson of Red Rooster are among Fast Company’s 100 most creative people in 2012.

Olajide Williams, Founder and President, Hip Hop Public Health

The Hip Hop Public Health Education Center at Harlem Hospital was established in response to a need to create innovative and culturally tailored health literacy programs for the Harlem community. Their mission is to “reduce healthcare disparities through context-relevant, cost-effective, intergenerational educational interventions focused on disease prevention and health promotion.”.

One of the programs is Hip-Hop Stroke. It is an educational program developed by the National Stroke Association in partnership with Harlem Hospital Center. It teaches schoolchildren key stroke concepts and motivate them to deliver the message to their families and adult caregivers. They use multi-media strategies, “hip-hop” music, interactive raps, and dance to teach children to recognize stroke symptoms and take urgent action. Children are also taught stroke risk reduction strategies including obesity prevention through proper nutrition and physical activity and smoking cessation. They are given take-home information packages and assignments designed to trigger child-parent discussion about stroke and enhance parental stroke knowledge.

Marcus Samuelson, Culinary Entrepreneur

After a celebrated run as executive chef at Aquavit Restaurant, the Ethiopia-born Marcus Samuelsson has built Red Rooster, critically heralded and reflective of the area’s many cultures. Says he, “I bike and I walk every corner of Harlem, and see so much diversity that’s unexpected,” Marcus says. Then he builds a menu around those encounters.

Harlem is on the leading edge of whats to come.

Chef Marcus Samuelsson opens Ginny’s Supper Club in Harlem

Chef Marcus Samuelsson’s new jazz and supper spot Ginny’s Supper Club has been in the works since he opened the popular Red Rooster restaurant in Harlem, and now the joint is open for business. Ginny’s Supper Club is conveniently located in the basement of the Red Rooster restaurant at 310 Lenox Avenue (212 792-9001) and it features a lounge atmosphere with banquette seating in a 120-seat space that will offer live music, DJs, poetry, small to mid-size plates, cocktails and good vibes from 6 PM nightly.

Chef Marcus Samuelsson of The Red Rooster restaurant is bringing the taste of Harlem to Food Network viewers this Friday February 24th, at 8 pm ET/PT. The TV special, called Savoring Harlem, will focus on Harlem’s new restaurants and food culture, as well as culinary institutions like Sylvia’s restaurant, and neighborhood green markets. Expect a diverse mix of cuisine to be represented in the show, including Ethiopian, Italian, French, Spanish and of course a healthy dose of soul food. It’s no wonder that Harlem has become a vibrant food destination, and Marcus Samuelsson has played a huge role in promoting the new food revolution in Harlem. Pink Teacup Owner Opens Auberge Laurent In Harlem

Auberge Laurent has opened in Harlem.Described as an elegant, brick-walled wine bar with a lounge, serving mostly French wines and beers by the glass and the bottle and cheeses and charcuterie.

It is owned by Lawrence Page who also owns the Actors’ Playhouse in Greenwich Village. He also owns the original Pink Tea Cup on Seventh Avenue South.

Plans to move or open a Pink Teacup in Harlem: “but we could not get a liquor license in this space because it was too close to a church…”

Mr. Page is negotiating for a location in Harlem, near Auberge Laurent, to reopen it, hopefully this Spring. He is also exploring ways to franchise the Pink Tea Cup.

“Most of my clientele is from Harlem and the Bronx and going to the Village was not convenient,” he said. “Now there’s this whole movement to Harlem, what with Red Rooster and all.”
