MLK Day – President Obama Inauguration celebrations at Red Rooster and Ginny’s Supper Club in Harlem

This Monday January 21st is a big day with both Martin Luther King, Jr. Day and the second inauguration of President Obama taking place. In Harlem, The Red Rooster and Ginny’s Supper Club will be celebrating with a day that starts with televising the inauguration and following events live from Washington DC on Monday morning starting at 11:00 am. Come nightfall, the joint will be jumpin’ with an evening of cocktails, dinner and entertainment featuring a performance by the fantastic finalist from “The Voice”, Amanda Brown. King Day at Ginny’s is said to be a community celebration with free admission, but you’ll want to reserve ahead if you plan on dining.

Ginny’s Supper Club is located between 125th and 126th street and Lenox Avenue, underneath Chef Marcus Samuelsson’s Red Rooster restaurant.

Alicia Keys ‘Keep a Child Alive’ Black Ball Redux at Harlem’s Apollo Theater

Alicia Keys is about to set it off at the Apollo Theater where the ninth annual Black Ball fundraiser for the singer’s Keep a Child Alive charity organization will take place this Thursday December 6th. The star-studded event has already raised over $13.8 million for Keep a Child Alive since it was started. Tickets range from $5000 – $100,000 for this high-end fundraising event.

SPEAKEASY at Ginny’s Supper Club in Harlem

Ginny’s Supper Club at The Red Rooster in Harlem is going back, way back in time with its SPEAKEASY party this Saturday night. The theme is ragtime-prohibition era atmosphere, but you know the drinks will be flowing. Guests are invited to take part and come correct and dressed as if you were stepping into a 1930′s moonshine-serving Speak Easy joint. The music will include a tribute to Bessie Smith and Louis Armstrong, performed by Maya Azucena and Allan Harris. Is Harlem jumpin’ or what!?

A new Harlem renaisiannce is here. One featuring a new wave of people living in harlem, an increase in the amount of attention being paid to Harlem, and utilization of new technology to showcase the richness of the community and it’s residents and visitors.

Speaking of which, some new residents are using the latest crowsourcing technology Kickstarter to promote an award winning movie they are making about Harlem, “Welcome to Harlem”.

Storyline

“Marty Blackstein, a young man of the new 20-something generation, after realizing that most of Manhattan today seems to be less about art and culture and more about money and corruption (and realizing that he can no longer afford this realization) decides to take a chance and move uptown to Harlem (151st st), NYC. Once there, he finds a sea of friendship, love and adventure enveloped in music, dance, grit and one of the most unique neighborhoods (and even more unique blocks) on the planet, and quickly learns that Harlem is not quite what he expected…”

Belle Harlem Restaurant looks to open soon…with your help

Harlem resident Chef Darryl Burnett has started a kickstarter page to help raise money to open “Belle Harlem,” a new restaurant that will offer “chic comfort food in Harlem.” The exact location is not known, but he hopes to open Bell Harlem on or near Harlem’s bustling restaurant row on Frederick Douglass Boulevard. Chef Darryl Burnette trained at The Culinary Institute of America and has worked under such renowned chefs as Marcus Samuelsson, Charlie Palmer, Jean Georges Vongerichten, and Andy D’ Amico. He was previously the Chef at 24 Prince, Bergdorf Goodman’s BG restaurant, and 5 and Diamond.

Check-out this video presentation of Belle Harlem, and get ready for a new casual dining restaurant that will focus on “southern classics with a modern vision with touches of French, Italian, Moroccan and Asian.”

Marcus Samuelsson is set to celebrate the launch of his memoir “Yes, Chef” with a Harlem Community Book Launch Event this Monday June 25^th. The FREE book launch event will take place from 3pm-7pm at the Richard Rodgers Amphitheater in Marcus Garvey Park (123^rd Street and Mount Morris Park West) and the book will be released in stores the next day. Harlem Community Day promises an afternoon filled with food, fun, kid’s activities, cooking demos, music, dance, drinks, and more. This is also a great occasion for Marcus Samuelsson to celebrate the success of The Red Rooster restaurant and Ginny’s Supper Club in Harlem, which are not to be missed.

Harlem Leaders Among Fast Company’s 100 Most Creative 2012

Olajide Williams of Hip Hop Public Health and Marcus Samuelson of Red Rooster are among Fast Company’s 100 most creative people in 2012.

Olajide Williams, Founder and President, Hip Hop Public Health

The Hip Hop Public Health Education Center at Harlem Hospital was established in response to a need to create innovative and culturally tailored health literacy programs for the Harlem community. Their mission is to “reduce healthcare disparities through context-relevant, cost-effective, intergenerational educational interventions focused on disease prevention and health promotion.”.

One of the programs is Hip-Hop Stroke. It is an educational program developed by the National Stroke Association in partnership with Harlem Hospital Center. It teaches schoolchildren key stroke concepts and motivate them to deliver the message to their families and adult caregivers. They use multi-media strategies, “hip-hop” music, interactive raps, and dance to teach children to recognize stroke symptoms and take urgent action. Children are also taught stroke risk reduction strategies including obesity prevention through proper nutrition and physical activity and smoking cessation. They are given take-home information packages and assignments designed to trigger child-parent discussion about stroke and enhance parental stroke knowledge.

Marcus Samuelson, Culinary Entrepreneur

After a celebrated run as executive chef at Aquavit Restaurant, the Ethiopia-born Marcus Samuelsson has built Red Rooster, critically heralded and reflective of the area’s many cultures. Says he, “I bike and I walk every corner of Harlem, and see so much diversity that’s unexpected,” Marcus says. Then he builds a menu around those encounters.

Harlem is on the leading edge of whats to come.

Chef Marcus Samuelsson opens Ginny’s Supper Club in Harlem

Chef Marcus Samuelsson’s new jazz and supper spot Ginny’s Supper Club has been in the works since he opened the popular Red Rooster restaurant in Harlem, and now the joint is open for business. Ginny’s Supper Club is conveniently located in the basement of the Red Rooster restaurant at 310 Lenox Avenue (212 792-9001) and it features a lounge atmosphere with banquette seating in a 120-seat space that will offer live music, DJs, poetry, small to mid-size plates, cocktails and good vibes from 6 PM nightly.
