In 2011-2012 the Harlem School of the Arts (HSA) launched its new Musical Theatre Program in an extraordinary partnership with Disney Theatrical Group. Our students helped to workshop the first ever children’s adaptations of the landmark musical phenomenon, The Lion King. Due to the success of this initial phase of the project, HSA has been invited to be one of the first schools to produce a pilot production of The Lion King KIDS and The Lion King JR. Beginning in fall 2012 and culminating in a full student production in the spring of 2013, this phase will include the development of a curriculum that will explore African & Asian cultures and world performance traditions including storytelling, music, dance, mask making, and much more.Special guests involved with the Broadway production will share their experiences with participants.

According to the Uptowner, Harlem offers multiple venues and options for weddings of all sizes and budgets. Below is an excerpt of selected venues.

Sylvia’s specializes in catering, with free space for wedding parties under 45 guests and or $500 an hour for more than 50.

Riverside Church holds anywhere from 65 to 75 weddings year. The main sanctuary rents for $3,500 and the most popular space, The Assembly Hall, for $3,200. But wedding coordinator Angela Gregory says few Harlem couples marry there.

The Alhambra Ballroom specializes in wedding receptions. Its wedding package includes a Rolls Royce limousine, a cake and five hours’ ballroom use for 125 guests for $12,350.

Other popular spaces include Melba’s Restaurant at Eighth and Manhattan avenues, the Dwyer Cultural Center on 123rd Street between St. Nicholas Avenue and Frederick Douglass Boulevard and, in West Harlem, the Harlem School of the Arts.
