I just checked-out the Visit El Barrio campaign website which was set up to promote Spanish Harlem, also known as El Barrio, as a tourism destination. The promotional video below features host Victor Cruz as he enthusiastically describes various spots in East Harlem, visiting restaurants that offer traditional Latino food, art galleries, museums, as well as street art and nightlife. It appears that the website has not been updated lately, but I am hoping that the folks behind this effort will keep it going. In any case, I highly recommend viewing the selection of videos on the site, which do a great job of putting a much-needed spotlight on establishments in El Barrio, Harlem.

Visit El Barrio

“A neighborhood rich in culture and history. Located in the northeastern part of Manhattan, the area stretches from 96th Street to 139th Street, and from the East River to 5th Avenue. It is home to one of the largest Latino communities in New York City and to the amazing diversity of the various communities that make up this great city. “El Barrio” is one of three official names for the area, and it stands for “The Neighborhood” in Spanish. The area is also known for being the birthplace of several internationally known Latin artists and home to the Graffiti Hall of Fame, as well as boasting the most amazing section of Central Park (Conservatory Garden) and being the start of the world-famous Museum Mile. Traces of the neighborhood’s history and culture can be found throughout the area, in its architecture and local establishments. Visit one of the last truly classic New York City neighborhoods, a bit off the beaten path, but still in the heart of the capital of the world.”

A company called Bluebrain has developed a free “location-aware” iPhone app called “Central Park: Listen to the Light,” a musical guide to central park.

The app is available here:

The app has no orderly track listing or specified run time. Instead it plays one of 400 tracks composed specifically for the app by the Holladay brothers, based on where you are in the Park, and only when in the Park. Including the Harlem Meer.

“Listen to the Light” contains just over 10 hours of music. Bradley Feldman, a programmer in Brooklyn, developed the software for both the Central Park and National Mall apps.

The work took over six months to create, included over 10 musicians and includes interesting instrumentation such as the pipe organ.

“Listen to the Light” is Bluebrain’s second app. Their first, released in May, surveyed the National Mall in Washngton.

E:Harlem (Experience Harlem) announced its 2nd Annual Harlem Bar & Restaurant Crawl, which is dubbed “Harlem Oktoberfest,” and set to take place next week on Tuesday, October 25th. This tasty initiative brings together some of the popular establishments from the growing “Harlem restaurant row,” on Frederick Douglass Boulevard between 112th street and 123nd street. Among the bars and restaurants participating in this year’s Harlem Bar & Restaurant Crawl are six of the hottest joints uptown, including Nectar Wine Bar, 67 Orange st, Harlem Vintage, Lido, Cedric, Zoma, Harlem Tavern, and 5 & Diamond.

It’s going to be a good night to get out and enjoy exclusive food and drink discounts, after purchasing your $20 ticket, which allows you to “crawl” between participating Harlem bars and restaurants from 6 to 10pm. You’ll also feel good about the whole evening because a portion your ticket payment will be donated to Food Bank NYC to benefit food kitchens in Harlem.
