Actor and activist Danny Glover will help kick-off the 6th annual Harlem Arts Advocacy Week  at the Aaron Davis Hall on the campus of the City College of New York this morning.  Sponsored by the Harlem Arts Alliance, Harlem Arts Advocacy Week will feature film screenings, poetry readings, walking tours, museum exhibits, hip-hop concerts, dance recitals,  a New Orleans-style jazz parade and more. One of the highlights will be the film “The Savoy King,” which will be screened on October 2nd at the Schomburg Center, offering a look back at the Lindy Hop dancers at Harlem’s famed Savoy Ballroom. The week of free arts events starts today, October 1st and runs until October 7th.

El Barrio Walking Tour

The 23rd Annual Mount Morris Park House Tour will take place this Sunday, June 10 from 11 AM to 4 PM, when participants will get to experience the community of Mount Morris Park up close with an invitation to visit homes of residents in the Harlem neighborhood.

You’ll explore inside three extraordinary houses in the Mount Morris Park Historic District that are not on the regular tour and ordinarily strictly private.

The 2nd Annual El Barrio Week starts today June 1st, and will continue through June 16th with events that celebrate this diverse neighborhood in East Harlem. The goal is to promote El Barrio’s small business and arts/cultural offerings with cultural events and programs that focus on the rich Latin American, Puerto Rican, and Caribbean cultural heritage and people in Spanish harlem.

Participating businesses and restaurants were brought together by the “Visit El Barrio” organization, resulting in an El Barrio Week packed with events, and themes like “El Barrio Eats!” and “Shop El Barrio!” in a campaign to promote the area and bring in more visitors. Visit El Barrio

Central Park: Listen to the Light

ORIGINAL:

A company called Bluebrain has developed a free “location-aware” iPhone app called “Central Park: Listen to the Light,” a musical guide to central park.

The app is available here:

The app has no orderly track listing or specified run time.  Instead it plays one of 400 tracks composed specifically for the app by the Holladay brothers, based on where you are in the Park, and only when in the Park.  Including the Harlem Meer.

“Listen to the Light” contains just over 10 hours of music. Bradley Feldman, a programmer in Brooklyn, developed the software for both the Central Park and National Mall apps.

The work took over six months to create, included over 10 musicians and includes interesting instrumentation such as the pipe organ.

“Listen to the Light” is Bluebrain’s second app. Their first, released in May, surveyed the National Mall in Washngton.
