Then there’s the dancer and choreographer Moetion, who is said to have taught HarlemShake moves in 2001 to dancers in the G Dep “Let’s Get It” video, Eve’s “Who’s That Girl” video, and Jadakiss “Put Your Hands Up” video.  A documentary called “Shake Down” featured Moetion in 2006, and I would bet that we’ll be seeing that make a comeback.  I wouldn’t be surprised to see P. Diddy cashing in on the re-emergence of the Harlem Shake since G. Dep was signed to his Bad Boy record label when the song “Special Delivery”, featuring a few Harlem Shake moves, came out in 1998.

The Harlem Shake hype is far from coming to an end, it’s already gone global and Filthy Frank’s first video based on Baauer’s Harlem Shake trap track is getting millions of views on Youtube along with the hundreds of Harlem Shake videos popping up daily. Let’s give the originators of the Harlem Shake their due as well.

ON STAGE PROGRAMMING

In 2011-2012 the Harlem School of the Arts (HSA) launched its new Musical Theatre Program in an extraordinary partnership with Disney Theatrical Group. Our students helped to workshop the first ever children’s adaptations of the landmark musical phenomenon, The Lion King. Due to the success of this initial phase of the project, HSA has been invited to be one of the first schools to produce a pilot production of The Lion King KIDS and The Lion King JR. Beginning in fall 2012 and culminating in a full student production in the spring of 2013, this phase will include the development of a curriculum that will explore African & Asian cultures and world performance traditions including storytelling, music, dance, mask making, and much more.Special guests involved with the Broadway production will share their experiences with participants.

The 2012 Harlem International Film Festival will kick-off on Wednesday, September 19 at 7pm, when Kevin Iega Jeff and Gary Abbott’s dance company Deeply Rooted Dance Theater will present a live performance before the premiere of Theodore Collatos’ film MOVE at the Schomburg Center in Harlem. Tickets: $20

The five day Harlem International Film Festival (Hi) will bring attention to filmmakers from around the world, and the festival’s Harlem Spotlight will highlight films produced or directed by Harlem residents, films shot in Harlem, or films about Harlem and Harlem history.  Tickets are available with a $10 donation at the MAYSLES CINEMA box office on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, & Friday, 12 – 6 pm.

It’s about to go down this evening at The Studio Museum in Harlem where the weekly “Uptown Fridays” party jumps-off from 7:00 PM – 10:00 PM.   You can go and get your groove on to the sounds of DJ1NEn2W0 and enjoy cocktails, but you can also connect with artists, curators, collectors and critics at the center of black art and culture. The admission price also includes a guided gallery tour of one of the current exhibitions at The Studio Museum in Harlem.
