Minton’s Redux and Harlem After Dark Events in April
When I wrote about the opening of Minton’s Harlem last October, I noted that it would be great if this new home of Jazz in Harlem would also “start a late-night jam session in a less-formal atmosphere, perhaps once a week, where customers would be able to order drinks and small plates, and young Jazz musicians would be invited to join Minton’s house band to create a mood of exploration and improvisation that might lead to something new and innovative in Jazz. As was the case at the original Minton’s Playhouse back in the day.”
Here we are in April, and Minton’s is welcoming the Spring season with a full line-up of talent set to perform every Wednesday during two events, starting on April 9th. Musical Directions and Revive-Music are collaborating with Minton’s Harlem to kick-off Minton’s Redux, featuring dinner and Jazz performances with seatings at 6pm and 8:30pm. While jackets are required for this early evening event, it looks like things will get funky late night Wednesdays with Harlem After Dark bringing a Jazz and hip-hop vibe with live musicians and a DJ as well, starting at 11pm. This will be a hot late night in Harlem, reminds me of the many events our friends at Giant Step ushered in to the scene in NYC.
Musical Directions & Revive-Music collaborate with iconic performance venue Minton’s – World famous for its role in the development of modern jazz. With the launch of Minton’s Redux an early evening supper club series, the producers intend to revive, restore & preserve Minton’s legacy as the preeminent venue to see rising talent in New York City. Alexander Smalls & Dick Parsons have turned the stage in their newly renovated supper club over to the next generation of Jazz artists & Arts Presenters.
