FC Harlem welcomes Thierry Henry and Rafa Marquez at new FieldTurf soccer field
New York City bicycle riders should recognize the bike path in the image above, it’s right off the Hudson River at about 140 street, where it continues up towards the George Washington bridge, or all the way down along the west side highway to Battery Park. The grounds here have just been given a total makeover and turned into a proper soccer field for young players, and the New York Red Bulls soccer stars Thierry Henry and Rafa Marquez were recently on hand to give the new FieldTurf field a test run, putting on a clinic as MLS W.O.R.K.S., the US Soccer Foundation, and FC Harlem dedicated the year round soccer field in Harlem. The pitch was created with FieldTurf’s patented system, so the grounds are made to last through all kinds of weather, wear and tear, giving inner-city kids a great field to play on for years to come. In fact, the NY Red Bulls pros play on FieldTurf pitches as well.
We have to give props to FC Harlem, who have been promoting the sport of soccer for the past two decades, as well as promoting healthy well-being and developing leaders in the community. Watch the video below for more on the organization. Look closely in the background and you might recognize Chef Marcus Samuelsson, owner of The Red Rooster restaurant in Harlem who was also on hand and a huge football (soccer) fan as well.
