Alia Rose Keeps Mama Teena Marie’s Memory Alive

It’s still hard for me to accept that Teena Marie is gone.  Her only daughter, Alia Rose, did an interview for Essence Magazine back in April where she talked about trying to cope with her loss and working on getting her mother’s album released next summer.  Teena had finished her new album before she transitioned.

Teena passed away just hours after celebrating Alia Rose’s 19th birthday.  If that’s not a passing of the light, I don’t know what is.  Not only does Alia Rose bear an uncanny resemblance to her mom, the similarities in their voices is straight haunting.  Alia said that she has been creatively sparked like never before.

So we have two exciting things to look forward to.  First, it will be bittersweet to have Teena’s last project released.  It provides something we can hold onto and cherish.  Then, one day, Alia Rose will release a project of her own.  I can’t wait to have both in my hands.  I’m proud of  Teena’s beautiful and talented daughter for gracefully keeping her mother’s legacy alive.  (Alia Rose with Teena at BB King\’s in 2009)
