“Girl Power Day” at SUNDAE SERMON also features film “Maestro”
This Sunday July 24th, Sundae Sermon party people will once again gather at Morningside Park in Harlem (Morningside Drive @ 114 Street) to dance from 3pm-8pm, and this time Dj Stormin’ Norman is joined by Dj Kamala, Dj Reborn, and Dj Beverly Bond. The theme for this event is “Girl Power Day” Mentoring Programs for Women, and it will Hosted by Image Activist Michaela Angela Davis.
After you’ve got your groove on at Sundae Sermon, stick around and watch the documentary film “Maestro” by Director Josell Ramos from 8:15pm-9:45pm at the same location, brought to you by The Maysles Cinema’s Outdoor Screening Series. I can tell you that if you remember dancing to the sounds of DJ Larry Levan at the famed “Paradise Garage” club, or DJ David Mancuso at “The Loft” downtown as I do back in the late ’70s and early ’80s, you will not want to miss this film. See the video preview below, where legendary DJ Frankie Knuckles shares memories of his dear friend Larry Levan.
Maestro tells the story of how a group of people found refuge and jump started the nascent club movement in post-Stonewall 70s New York City. What evolved was a scene that set the ground work for what was to come in dance music culture worldwide. This film provides a rare insight into the early days of the underground dance scene in New York City. Included in the film are pioneer dance music DJs and producers, “founding fathers”, its center being Larry Levan, as well as high-profile DJs of today. Includes appearances by Larry Levan, David Mancuso, Frankie Knuckles, Nicky Sciano, Francois K, Francis Grasso, Jellybean Benitez, Danny Tenaglia, Tony Humphries, Tee Scott, Dimitri From Paris, Danny Krivit, Pete Tong, Joe Claussell, Little Louie Vega, Keith Haring and many, many incredible dancers from the Loft, Paradise Garage days.
